Postcards from the Road

The Mitchell Corn Palace sits in the middle of historic downtown Mitchell South Dakota.  It is, in fact, made of cement, but coated in corn cobs and leaves to appear as if it’s made of corn.  It’s giant green onion domes stretch 40 feet into the sky over tiny Mitchell like an odd alien sculpture in the middle of a small town with plain houses and storefronts.

It is your basic middle America road stop.  See the corn palace! Experience the corn palace, it’s the only one in all the world!  Like carnival barkers, the signs tell terrible jokes and beg for people to see their magical wonders.

So we pulled off the highway to see the corn palace.  What a wonder it is.
